Sheffield, was the city of choice for the 2023 conference. Between Friday 6th – Sunday 8th October fifty-one members and friends gathered at the Mercure St Paul Hotel & Spa for the weekend.
Following the traditional meet and greet buffet on the Friday evening the lecture programme started on Saturday morning with a welcome from President Roz McMullan. There followed presentations covering such diverse topics as the John McLean Oral History Project, the BDA Benevolent Fund, Dental Nursing Development and, from our American colleagues, Advertising Trade Cards of the Victorian Era and Repairing Rare Books.
The afternoon gave us a breath of fresh air, with a guided walk around the city. A city with a proud past from steel but looking forward to the future with many new industries taking up residence.
The evening was the Conference Dinner held at Cutlers’ Hall, just a short walk from the Hotel. The hall is a spectacular Victorian building with marble and chandeliers aplenty; matched only by the food – a very enjoyable event.
Back to the lectures on Sunday morning with talks as diverse as those on Saturday. Starting with ‘Pliers’ followed by Facial Harmony and then the controversy surrounding the extraction of first molars. And, if all that was not enough, two young colleagues rounded off the session with Dental Archaeology. It doesn’t get much better than that!
